In Florida and Georgia, weather can change fast. One minute it’s calm, next, there’s a hurricane warning. As property managers, we’ve seen firsthand how preparation can make all the difference.

Whether it’s a storm, power outage, or fire emergency, staying ready isn’t just about protection; it’s about peace of mind. And when it comes to affordable housing safety, every resident deserves both.

This guide will walk you through simple steps to stay safe, feel confident, and act quickly when it matters most.

Hurricane Season: Don’t Wait to Get Ready

From June through November, hurricanes are a real threat. Early preparation is key.

We recommend all residents in affordable low-income housing have a storm kit ready to go. Think flashlights, chargers, food, water, and copies of important documents.

If a storm is expected, we’ll send property updates and evacuation info through our office or resident portal. Make sure your contact info is up to date.

Power Outages: Keep Calm and Stay Safe

Power outages can happen during storms, or even on a clear day due to grid issues. Most outages are short, but longer ones can be stressful.

Here’s what to do:

  • Don’t open the fridge or freezer unless needed
  • Unplug electronics to prevent surge damage
  • Use flashlights, not candles
  • Report the outage to your utility provider

If you use medical devices that rely on electricity, contact us. We’ll help connect you to resources or backup plans.

Fire Safety: Know the Plan Before You Need It

Fires move fast. Knowing what to do ahead of time can save lives.

We keep smoke detectors working, fire extinguishers accessible, and exit routes clear. Our REAC NSpire Inspectors in Florida and Georgia check all of this during routine inspections, ensuring nothing is overlooked.

Still, here’s what you can do:

  • Test your smoke alarms monthly
  • Never block exits
  • Keep flammable items away from stoves and heaters
  • Report electrical issues immediately

And always, always know where your nearest exit is.
